Traffic and Web Log Analysis

It is absolutely essential that you perform traffic analysis on a regular basis (daily ideal, however at least once a week is recommended, if you cannot do daily).

Traffic analysis allows you to monitor and adjust your search engine optimization and marketing strategy. You can do this simply by analyzing a few key data regarding your traffic:

1) How your online visitors are finding you?
2) Which of your web pages are your online visitors finding on search engines?
3) What are the most popular pages on your website?
4) What is the geographical location of the visitors to your site?
5) What web pages are not visited or not not located by search engines?
6) Is search engine robots crawling your entire site or not?
7) How do the visitors navigate once they are on your website?
8) What are the main sources of your visitors (what websites)?
9) What search engines bring you the most amount of traffic?

As part of any search engine optimization marketing, you need to know the answers to the above questions, at a minimum.

You may ask, how do I find out the answers to the above question?

Well, the answer is simple, YOUR LOG FILES.

Your website log files which you have access to as part of your web hosting service from your (ISP) Internet Service Provider, provides a great deal of data for you to analyze. These log files keep track of all the information regarding your web hosting servers and has useful information on every visitor and every page that is visited, including a) where did your online visitor come from, and b) what search terms and phrases did your online user enter into the search engine before finding and arriving at your site.

Web Traffic Log Analysis Tools and Utilities

Now, if you are not very technical and/or want a user friendly tool that provides a graphical display of your log files, then you are in luck.

There are many tools that allow you to view your log files with a user friendly graphical interface. These provide many charts and tables that allow quick analysis and comparison of data, and often save you a lot of time.

Some of these tools include (but check with your ISP to see which is provided for you for free as part of your website hosting service):

Generally, you have three options for tracking and analyzing Web traffic. You can either install a server-side web traffic analyzer software on your web server, or you can install a traffic analyzer software on your desktop PC and import the log files from the server to be used by this client-side software, or your final option is to use a service provider that offers an online service and you outsource this task to such a specialist.
